As with all departments in a company, the warehouse is a cost centre to be monitored. The total cost will include all of the labour, heating, lighting, rates, rent used by the warehouse. The total cost should not be increasing faster than the growth in sales. This however is only a part of the story. Is the cost per unit despatched increasing? A simple calculation of dividing the number of items despatched by the total cost of the warehouse. Is the cost per unit held in stock increasing? Also a simple calculation of the number of units in stock divided by the total cost of the warehouse.
